In dense London neighbourhoods, space is rarely expanded outward. It is carved upward.
This Maida Vale loft conversion transforms the upper level of a traditional terrace into a bright, open living area — defined not by walls, but by light.
At roof level, a single frameless rooflight sits confidently between solar panels, drawing daylight deep into the space below. Internally, full-width glazing opens onto a roof terrace, creating a continuous relationship between interior and skyline.
The result is a loft that feels far larger than its footprint.
Why light mattered
Loft conversions bring potential — but also constraint. Roof slopes, party walls and surrounding buildings can limit side-facing light.
Here, daylight from above was essential.
A fixed, frameless rooflight was specified to maximise glass area while maintaining clean architectural lines. Without heavy internal framing, the glazing reads as a precise opening to the sky rather than an inserted window.
Light enters vertically, softening the geometry of the ceiling and balancing the strong horizontal line of the terrace doors.
Even in an urban setting, the sky becomes part of the room.
Why a fixed, frameless solution?
This project required clarity and reliability.
With multiple roof elements already present — including solar arrays — simplicity was key. A fixed unit removed unnecessary mechanical complexity while delivering maximum glass and long-term performance.
From inside, the frameless detailing ensures the ceiling remains refined and uninterrupted.
From outside, the unit integrates neatly within the flat roof construction, sitting comfortably alongside solar panels without visual clutter.
Why Cambridge Skylights?
In projects like this, precision matters.
Cambridge fixed frameless rooflights offer strong thermal performance, a clean external profile and a sharp internal finish — all essential within high-spec loft conversions.
The result here demonstrates exactly that balance: performance without distraction.

The finished effect
The combination of overhead glazing and full-width terrace doors creates a layered light source — sky above, skyline ahead.
During the day, the loft is filled with natural light. In the evening, the sky becomes a framed view. What might otherwise feel like a contained upper floor instead feels connected and expansive.
In a city where every square metre counts, light is what makes space feel generous.
And here, it leads.
