Light Where It Matters Most

Side return extensions are clever pieces of design. They reclaim unused space and transform how a home functions — but they come with a quiet challenge: light.

For this kitchen extension, bringing daylight into the new footprint was not simply desirable, it was essential. The rear of the house benefits from direct sun later in the day, but the plan also introduced an internal room branching off the kitchen — a room that would depend almost entirely on roof glazing to feel open and connected.

Without rooflights, it risked becoming secondary.

Instead, it became integral.

From the moment the rooflights were installed, the balance of the space shifted. Light now enters from above as well as from the rear, softening the narrow geometry of the side return and preventing darker pockets from forming. Even on overcast days, the room feels bright and usable.

Not dramatic. Not forced. Just consistently light.

Why a fixed, frameless design?

Maximising daylight was the primary objective, but visual simplicity mattered just as much.

A fixed, frameless rooflight keeps the ceiling line clean. There are no bulky internal borders or heavy frames drawing attention away from the architecture. The timber reveals were detailed to align with other wooden elements in the room, creating continuity rather than contrast.

The glazing feels integrated rather than inserted.

It allows the light to lead.

Choosing Cambridge Skylights

Confidence came from clarity.

Strong Trustpilot reviews provided reassurance. Competitive pricing made the product accessible without compromising performance. And a clear, user-friendly website made specifying the correct sizes straightforward — an important detail when coordinating with builders and timelines.

The decision felt informed rather than rushed.

The transformation

The renovation as a whole has reshaped how the home is used, but the rooflights play a quiet and significant role in that change.

Maximising daylight has elevated the overall feel of the kitchen and adjoining room. It is now the space where most of daily life unfolds — cooking, working, gathering.

The difference is not simply brightness. It is comfort.
