Bringing Sunshine into a Low-Ceiling Extension

Project & photography: Lisa Peace

Some projects are about scale.
Others are about transformation.

This extension began as a relatively small space with a low ceiling and limited natural light. The footprint worked — but the atmosphere did not. It felt enclosed and dim, particularly during darker months.

The intention was simple: bring the sunshine in.

Why light mattered

With a lower ceiling height, side windows alone could not lift the space sufficiently. Introducing roof glazing offered a vertical source of daylight — changing how the room felt without altering its footprint.

Even though the extension is compact, larger-sized fixed rooflights were installed. The impact was immediate.

The kitchen and dining area shifted from feeling enclosed to open and bright. Light now enters from above, washing across cabinetry and dining surfaces, softening shadows and enhancing the sense of volume.

What was once dark now feels uplifting.

Why fixed, frameless rooflights?

Ventilation was not required for this project, so mechanical complexity was unnecessary.

A fixed solution offered clarity and reliability.

The minimal internal framework was particularly appealing. With slimmer sightlines, the glazing maximises visible sky and natural light. The rooflights feel clean and contemporary, allowing the architecture — and the daylight — to take centre stage.

More glass.
Less distraction.

A seasonal highlight

One unexpected joy came in winter.

On frosty mornings, delicate ice patterns formed across the glazing, creating a stunning natural display above the dining table. What might otherwise have been a purely functional roof opening became something quietly beautiful.

A changing sky in summer.
Frosted patterns in winter.
Light in every season.

Why Cambridge Skylights?

For homeowners unfamiliar with roof pitches and technical details, reassurance matters.

Guidance was provided at every stage — from specification advice to direct conversations with the builder. The delivery team ensured everything required for installation was in place, and support continued beyond completion.

The process felt straightforward.

Professional.

Considered.

And the aftercare matched the product quality.

The finished result

Though modest in size, the extension now feels generous.

The rooflights have transformed how the kitchen and dining area are experienced daily. Natural light defines the space. Even on overcast days, it feels welcoming.

Sometimes the most meaningful upgrades are not structural — they are atmospheric.

And here, light changed everything.
