Turning a Long Extension into a Light-Filled Space

Project feature: @thebigger_house

Long extensions can be transformative — but they can also feel enclosed if light only enters from one direction.

For this project, the footprint was long and relatively narrow. From the outset, the intention was to prevent the new space from feeling tunnel-like or shaded. Skylights were not an afterthought — they were part of the strategy to make the extension feel open, bright and balanced.

Even in a north-facing orientation, natural light from above would be key.

Why a fixed, frameless rooflight?

Ventilation was not a priority here. The homeowners knew they would rarely want to open the rooflights, so simplicity made sense.

A fixed, frameless design offered maximum glass area without bulky internal framing. Clean lines. No unnecessary mechanisms. Just uninterrupted daylight entering from above.

The result is a ceiling that feels calm and refined, allowing the light itself to define the space.

Choosing Cambridge Skylights

Confidence came from reputation and proximity.

Strong reviews and responsive customer service provided reassurance. Being a local company added another layer of trust — knowing exactly who you’re buying from matters.

The ordering process was straightforward, and the support along the way made the decision feel easy.

The impact

The difference has been striking.

What could have felt like a small or dark extension has become one of the favourite spaces in the house. Even in a north-facing setting, the amount of light entering from above shifts the atmosphere entirely.

The skylights lift the space — visually and emotionally.

They make it feel bigger.

Brighter.

More open.

But more than that, they change how the space is experienced. What was once simply a long footprint now feels purposeful and welcoming. Light moves through it throughout the day, softening the proportions and giving the extension a sense of ease.

It is no longer defined by its length — but by the quality of light within it.
