Layered Daylight in Earlsfield

In collaboration with Ash Island Lofts

In Victorian and Edwardian terraces across South West London, rear extensions often stretch the footprint — but without careful planning, they can leave the centre of the home relying on artificial light.

This Earlsfield SW18 project approaches the problem differently.

Rather than a single roof opening, multiple fixed frameless rooflights are introduced in rhythm across the ceiling. The repetition distributes daylight evenly, preventing harsh contrast and creating a calm, balanced atmosphere throughout the kitchen-dining space.

The result is bright — but never stark.

Why light mattered

The footprint extends back from the original house, with full-height doors opening onto the garden. While rear glazing brings strong horizontal light, it cannot always carry daylight deep into the middle of the room — particularly in London’s tightly packed terraces.

Here, overhead glazing completes the picture.

Daylight enters from above and ahead, layering the light source and eliminating shadowed zones. The kitchen island, dining area and cabinetry all benefit equally.

The space feels generous not because it is oversized — but because it is evenly lit.

Why fixed frameless rooflights?

Simplicity and clarity.

A fixed frameless solution maximises visible glass without internal bulk. The ceiling plane remains uninterrupted, allowing the eye to travel naturally from front to back.

With clean plaster detailing around each unit, the rooflights read as architectural openings rather than add-ons.

They quietly elevate the room.

Why Cambridge Skylights?

For projects where multiple units are installed in sequence, precision is essential.

Cambridge fixed frameless rooflights offer:

  • Strong thermal performance

  • Minimal external profile

  • Crisp internal glass lines

  • Reliable long-term durability

In high-use family kitchens like this, performance and aesthetics must work together.

The clean integration here demonstrates exactly that balance.

The finished atmosphere

The combination of pale cabinetry, natural timber flooring and overhead glazing creates a space that feels warm and bright throughout the day.

Morning light softens the breakfast area. Afternoon light washes across the island. Even on overcast days, the ceiling remains luminous.

It is not dramatic.

It is consistent.

And that consistency is what makes the room so comfortable to live in.
