Large rear extensions create wonderful open spaces — but they can quickly feel dim if daylight cannot reach the centre of the room.
For this project, the homeowners were planning a substantial 5m × 8.5m kitchen extension. The scale of the room offered fantastic potential for open-plan living, but it also introduced a common challenge: ensuring light reached deep into the space.
Two carefully positioned Cambridge HorizonLite Fixed Frameless Roof Windows (800 × 2000 mm) solved that challenge immediately.
From above, daylight now travels across the entire room, illuminating both the kitchen and dining area while naturally lifting the atmosphere throughout the extension.
What might have been a darker interior space has become bright, open and inviting.

Why light was so important?
Rear extensions often rely heavily on glazing at the back of the property.
But when rooms become larger — particularly in open-plan layouts — daylight from the rear doors alone rarely reaches the centre of the space.
In this design, the rooflights allow light to fall from above, distributing daylight far more evenly across the kitchen.
An additional benefit appears in an adjoining playroom located off the dining area, which has no external window of its own. The rooflight above helps pull natural light into this secondary space as well, ensuring it still feels connected and usable throughout the day.
The result is a room that feels balanced and comfortable rather than enclosed.

Why a fixed frameless rooflight?
For this project, simplicity and clarity were key.
The homeowners wanted a modern architectural finish with minimal visual interruption. A fixed frameless design was the natural choice, offering the largest possible glass area while maintaining a refined ceiling line.
Without visible framing or opening mechanisms below, the glazing reads as a clean opening to the sky.
It maximises daylight while preserving the calm aesthetic of the interior.

Choosing Cambridge Skylights
During the planning stage, the homeowners carefully researched a range of rooflight suppliers.
Strong Google and Trustpilot reviews, competitive pricing, and clear product information helped make Cambridge Skylights the preferred choice.
Reliable delivery times were also important, as the project required the rooflights within a defined construction schedule.
The result was a smooth process from specification through to installation.

The finished result
The impact of the rooflights was immediate.
Natural light now reaches the full depth of the extension, bringing brightness to areas that would otherwise have felt shaded. The combination of roof glazing and rear doors ensures the space remains comfortable and welcoming throughout the day.
Even on overcast days, daylight continues to filter through the rooflights, maintaining a soft, natural illumination across the kitchen and dining area.
What was once simply an extension has become the brightest and most enjoyed part of the home.
