When extending a home, natural light becomes one of the most important design considerations — particularly when the space grows deeper and wider.
For this project, the homeowners created a large rear kitchen extension. Because the back of the house faces east, the design needed to maximise the morning sunlight and ensure the room never felt deep or shadowed.
A Cambridge HorizonLite Fixed Frameless Roof Window (1000 × 1200 mm) was chosen to bring daylight into the centre of the room — allowing the sky to become part of the architecture.
The result is a kitchen and dining space that feels bright, open and connected to the outdoors from the moment the day begins.

Why light mattered
Rear extensions often rely on glazed doors at the back of the property for daylight. But when the footprint increases, natural light can struggle to reach the middle of the room.
In this home, the rooflight helps solve that problem.
Positioned above the main kitchen area, it allows daylight to fall vertically into the centre of the extension. Even during overcast weather, the additional light softens the depth of the room and keeps the space feeling balanced.
Because the property faces east, the effect is particularly noticeable in the mornings when sunlight enters through the skylight and windows simultaneously.
The entire room fills with light.

Why a fixed, frameless rooflight
A frameless design was an important part of the aesthetic.
The homeowners wanted a clean, contemporary ceiling line without heavy frames or visible glazing bars interrupting the view above.
Fixed frameless rooflights maximise the glass area while keeping the interior detailing minimal and refined. The result is a roof opening that feels architectural rather than mechanical.
From inside, the glazing appears almost invisible — allowing the sky to become the focal point.

Choosing Cambridge Skylights
Before making a decision, the homeowners carefully researched a range of suppliers and rooflight options.
Cambridge Skylights stood out thanks to the quality of the HorizonLite design, the simplicity of the frameless detailing, and the consistently strong customer feedback.
The result was a product that balanced performance, appearance and value, making it the ideal choice for the project.
The finished space
Since installation, the rooflight has transformed the atmosphere of the extension.
Natural daylight now flows easily into the centre of the room, preventing darker pockets and keeping the space feeling open throughout the day.
But the most noticeable moment arrives on sunny mornings, when the east-facing orientation allows sunlight to stream through the rooflight and fill the kitchen with warmth and brightness.
It is the kind of detail that quietly defines the space — simple, elegant and effective.
And one the homeowners say they would choose again without hesitation.
